Graduation

1. What if a student starts as a full-time student the first semester but then is enrolled part-time in another semester (or vice versa)? How should I report this group of students as their full-time/part-time status varies from semester to semester?

A: If the student was full-time, degree seeking when they first enrolled, they would be included as full-time even if they became part-time at some point afterward. The overall idea is to capture outcomes for students who first enrolled as full-time.

2. Should a student who withdraws or is dismissed from the institution be included in the "transfer out" category of the NYSED graduation report?

A: If you know the student transferred to another institution, then they should be reported as “non-completer, transfer out.” If you are unsure what happened to the student after they left the institution then they should be reported under “non-completer, other/unknown.”

3. What if a student earns an associate’s degree while they are seeking/completing a bachelor’s or vice versa? What category do we include them in?

A: A student should always be included in the category based on how they initially started in the cohort (seeking a bachelors or seeking less than a bachelors). You can only report one degree earned so report the highest degree that student earned within the 200% of the time.

4. How do I report students who completed an associate’s degree in more than 4 years?

A: Since we are only collecting graduation out 200% of the time (4 years), these students would not be counted as earning a degree but they should still be counted in the cohort. If for example, the student was initially seeking a bachelor’s degree and started as a freshman in the cohort and now, 8 years later, they have an associate's degree, they would be counted in the “non-completer – other” group. They would still be counted in the cohort.
