Enrollment of College Students with Disabilities

1. What if I don’t know which category a specific condition falls under?

A: You can find a list of conditions and their corresponding categories here: https://higheredsupport.nysed.gov/hc/en-us/articles/209615606-List-of-Conditions. If a condition is not listed you can send a ticket to Higheredsupport and we will help you.

2. What if a student has multiple conditions within one category (Ex. multiple mental health or multiple mobility disabilities)?

A: Only count them once under that category. If they have multiple disabilities across two or more different categories count them in each of those separate categories and count them under “multiple disabilities.”

3. Can you clarify who to include under the “staff” section?

A: Staff includes:

  • Individuals who fall under the institution’s disability access office’s organizational chart
  • Those who perform duties directed and/or supervised by the disability access office
  • Those who are taking part in a federal work study program or are paid with funds used to support students with disabilities.
  • Student workers

4. Should a student with a print disabilities be counted in additional categories?

A: Yes. For example, a student counted in the “print disability” section should also be counted in the “sensory” section under the category most fitting.

5. When is the Enrollment of College Students with Disabilities form due?

A: The Enrollment of College Students with Disabilities report is due the first week of August each year and requests counts of college students with disabilities enrolled in your institution the previous academic year (July 1- June 30).

6. What does the term “to the appropriate office” mean in the instructions?

A: Students must self-identify as a student with a disability to the office or person designated by the institution they attend to determine eligibility for services and ensure equitable access. This office may be called Accessibility Resource Center, Disabled Student Services, Services for Students with Disabilities, Student Disability Services, etc., or fall within multi-function offices such as student services, learning resource centers, etc.

7. Do I include students who have not provided disability documentation?

A: Include all students who self-identified as students with a disability to the appropriate office, whether or not they provided documentation or received disability services.

8. Should I include students who don’t self-identify as students with disabilities until the Winter or Spring term?

A: Yes, this is a full year collection so include students who self-identified at any point during the academic year.

9. Do I include students who develop a permanent or temporary disability in the Winter or Spring term?

A: Yes, these students should be included even if they did not have a disability in the Fall term.

10. If a student did not have a disability in the Fall term, why would I include them?

A: The form is intended to collect an accurate number of students who self-identify with a disability at any time during the academic year (July 1- June 30), as long as they are enrolled in one or more credit-bearing courses in the Fall term.
